Title: Using touch to interact and learn: Tactile strategies for infants and toddlers with visual impairments including those with additional disabilities.
Description: The significance of touch in early social-emotional, cognitive, and communication development is the focus of this session. Components of the Project SPARKLE Touch Profile will be used as a means of gathering information about a child’s experience with and response to tactile information and use of touch. Selected tactile strategies such as hand-under hand guidance, hand-over-hand guidance, tactile modeling, and mutual tactile attention will be discussed. Participants will consider the benefits and challenges of using these strategies with infants and toddlers with visual impairments. Content will be shared through discussion, learning activities, PowerPoint slides, handout and video clips will be used.
