The Development of Grasp and Its Impact on Daily Activities of Young Children

Children with visual impairment often rely heavily on tactile exploration as they learn about their world. Interventionists who work with very young children with visual impairments benefit from a working knowledge of the unique fine motor milestones that these children experience as they develop grasp for object manipulation.  In addition, professional competency in this area will facilitate effective teaming as vision professionals work with other therapists to meet the needs of the children on their caseload.

The Role of the Environment in Supporting Learning for Young Children with CVI

Children with cortical/cerebral visual impairment learn best in an environment that supports their needs. While the “hard environment” (physical) is critical, the “soft environment” (atmosphere) cannot be overlooked. In this workshop, we will consider the environmental needs of very young children with CVI including the “hard” and “soft” environments of the home.

Enticing Engagement in Young Children with Multiple Impairments

Active engagement is important for the learning of all children, however it is critical for young children with multiple impairments that include vision loss. Helping parents identify and implement activities that entice their children to explore and participate can have a profound and  positive impact on family life and child learning.
